CLEP - College Level Program (www.collegeboard.com)

  • Computer-based test.
  • Given weekly.
  • Check with your advisor and university catalog for eligibility and minimum score requirements.
  • Registration is required.
  • Must wait 6 months before retesting.
  • $77 test fee, credit card or check, payable the day of the test.
  • $23 admin fee, check or credit card, nonrefundable, due at registration.
  • Valid ID required - must match name on registration.
  • Register online for CLEP.
After determining which CLEP exam you want to take, please click the "Register online for CLEP" link above and complete the online registration process. By clicking the link you are registering for the CLEP exam that you want to take. It is not necessary to choose the specific CLEP exam. The testing center staff will give you the CLEP exam of your choice on your testing date. Make sure you bring your registration receipt with you on the day of testing.

Computer Science Placement Exam

  • Optional exam for students entering UA with a solid background in computing applications.
  • Successful completion allows you to skip CS 102 (you will not receive credit for CS 102.)
  • This exam may only be taken once.
  • Register Online.

Foreign Language Placement Exams

  • Available in Spanish, French, German, Latin, and Russian.
  • May be taken once.
  • For Spanish, French, and German -- computer adaptive exam
  • For Latin and Russian -- computer based exam
  • Spanish or French
    • 2 or more years of study -- option to take the placement exam for possible placement into a 200 level course or not take the exam and be placed into 103
  • Honors Spanish and French
    • FR 201 - 005 and SP 201- 007 recommended for those who place into 201 IF
      • Accepted into the UA Honors program
      • Score 28 or higher on the ACT
      • Score 1220 or higher on the SAT
  • German, Latin, or Russian
    • 2 or more years of study -- placement exam required
  • College credit options
    • Must be placed into 201 or higher based on placement exam
    • Credit for lower level courses will be granted
      • If student earns a grade "C" or higher (in placed course) AND
      • Student submits a written petition

MAT - Miller Analogies Test (www.milleranalogies.com)

  • Computer-based test.
  • Given weekly.
  • Registration required.
  • Must present retest ticket if retesting within one year.
  • Can only be taken three times in one year.
  • $93 fee, check or credit card, nonrefundable, due at registration.
  • Valid ID required -- must match name on registration.
  • Standby testing is allowed if space is available the day of the test.
  • Register online.

Mathematics Placement Exam

Required for all freshmen and any students who must take a math course at UA who do not already have approved math tranfer credit.

Residual ACT - (www.act.org)

  • Must be an applied or admitted student to UA to test.
  • Not available for any other institution or program.
  • Pencil and paper test.
  • Offered by appointment.
  • Scores only good for admission to The University of Alabama.
  • No score reports given or sent.
  • Cannot be used for scholarship purposes.
  • Must wait 60 days before retesting.
  • $65 test fee, check or credit card, nonrefundable, due at registration.
  • Valid ID required - must match name on registration.
  • Register online.
